Today's Moment to Remember
... the "American March King" ...
... the "American March King" ...
On tomorrow's date, November 6, in 1854, one of America's most famous conductors, who created some of our greatest marching songs, John Philip Sousa was born. Fittingly, he was born in Washington, D.C., where he later led the United States Marine Band, also known "The President's Own." Amazingly, he wrote and published 137 marching songs - including "The Stars and Stripes Forever," which is the National March of the United States of America, "Semper Fidelis," the Official March of the United States Marine Corps, and "The Washington Post." His path to becoming a famous composer began at age 14, when his dad signed him up (enlisted him) in the U.S. Marine Band as an apprentice. He spent 7 years playing violin and other instruments for the band and then left to learn to conduct. He rejoined the U.S. Marine Band in 1880 and served as its Director (conductor) for 12 years - reaching the rank of Sergeant Major. And, yes, he's the namesake of the 'sousaphone' instrument - many call it a mini-tuba.
You can listen to some of the famous marching songs he composed in the playlist below.
