Today's Moment to Remember

During this time (Oct 25-29), 36 years ago, in 1983, the United States Armed Forces invaded Grenada - an island in the southern end of the Caribbean Sea. Approximately 7,700 troops from all services participated in this attack - known as Operation Urgent Fury. A coup d'etat (violent overthrow of the government) and murder of Grenada's prime minister, Maurice Bishop, gave America cause for the attack to restore freedom to Grenada's citizens. During the military mission, more than 200 American citizens, most attending medical school on the island, were rescued. Not surprisingly, and as further evidence of a potential communist group takeover of Grenada during this Cold War timeframe, numerous troops, and advisors from communist countries (Cuba, East Germany, North Korea, Soviet Union, and others) were found to be on the island. During this invasion, the U.S. Armed Forces suffered 116 wounded and 19 killed in action (KIA). Look below to review the names of and honor the fallen from the US Army historical recount of this operation.
[ Note: Thanks to fellow Flag Steward, Tim Reiter, a U.S. Army veteran and Operation Urgent Fury combatant from the 82nd Airborne Division, for submitting this remembrance of the Invasion of Grenada. ]
