Today's Moment to Remember
[ USS Constitution battles HMS (British) Guerriere during the War of 1812 = public domain ]
On this date, October 21st, in 1797, the USS Constitution, also known as 'Old Ironsides,' was launched. The USS Constitution is the world's oldest navy ship still afloat. It was one of the six original frigates approved for construction by the Naval Act of 1794 - fully establishing a U.S. Navy. The USS Constitution earned her nickname, Old Ironsides, during the War 1812 - when she defeated 5 British warships beginning with the HMS Guerriere. The British cannonballs seemed to bounce off the Constitution's hull (sides of ship) like she were made of iron. ;)
The mission of the USS Constitution today is to educate citizens about the Navy's role in war and peacetime and participate in public, historical events. She has a crew of 60 that keep the vessel open to touring visitors. She is docked at Pier 1 of the Charlestown Navy Yard at one end of the Freedom Trail.
