On yesterday's date, October 13th, in 1775, the U.S. Navy was born.  John Adams, one of our Founding Fathers and 2nd U.S. President, is known as the 'Father of the U.S. Navy' because during his term as our 1st Vice President he made a push to establish a strong U.S. Navy.  With the Naval Act of 1794, John Adams got Congress to approve manning and construction of 6 ships.  The first 3 ships were the USS United States, USS Constellation, and USS Constitution - also known as 'Old Ironsides.'
The Navy's mission today, as it was back then, is:
To recruit, train, equip, and organize to deliver combat ready Naval forces to win conflicts and wars while maintaining security and deterrence through sustained forward presence.  The U.S. Navy (USN) is the world's largest and most lethal navy in the world - with about 290 vessels (boats) including 11 power-projecting aircraft carriers.  It is larger than the world's next 13 navies combined - including 11 U.S. ally navies ;)  The Navy has more than 330,000 active duty personnel (full-time employees) and more than 100,000 in the Naval Reserve (part-time employees).  It is the 3rd largest U.S. military branch in terms of number of personnel.
