Upcoming Half-Staff Alerts
National Half-Staff for National Fallen Firefighters Memorial on Sun., 10/6
[ Note: Flag Steward proves it is the most accurate and complete listing of half-staff (National, State, & Local) again:  Flags Express, Flag Notify, Colonial Flag app, and Legacy are all missing the CALIFORNIA and FLORIDA half-staffs today.  Also, Flags Express and Legacy are still showing Texas at half-staff, but that state's flags are back to full staff because Deputy Dahliwal's funeral was y-day. ]
Today's Moment to Remember
... Battle of Mogadishu ...

[ Picture of "Super 64" enroute on Oct. 3, 1993 - the 2nd Black Hawk shot down, and whose pilot, CWO3 Durant, was captured, during the battle made famous in the movie "Black Hawk Down" ]
On this date, October 3 and 4, in 1993, was the Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia.  What was intended to be a one-hour operation by Task Force Ranger personnel to capture leaders of the Somali war clan turned into a 2-day long battle.  The assault force of 160 combatants in 19 aircraft and 12 vehicles, comprised of special operations units from the Army (Rangers & Delta Force), Air Force (Combat Controllers & Pararescue), and Navy (SEALs), was surprised by the number of and weaponry of the Somali militia forces who shot down 2 Black Hawk helicopters with RPGs (rocket-propelled grenades).  So, the assault quickly turned into a battle to save and rescue the combatants in the downed helicopters.  During the rescue, 2 Delta Force snipers were inserted to protect and save the 2nd downed Black Hawk crew - including pilot Chief Warrant Officer 3 Mike Durant.  Master Sergeant Gordon and Sergeant First Class Shugart fought off 100s of Somali attackers, but were eventually overrun and pilot Durant captured.  The battle ended with 19 US military personnel killed, 73 wounded, and 1 captured.  And, for their heroics, Gordon and Shugart were posthumously bestowed with the Medal of Honor - the first since the Vietnam War.
