... Colonial America's first test of Freedom of the Press ...
... Colonial America's first test of Freedom of the Press ...
On this date (OTD), September 25, in 1690, the first multi-page newspaper was printed in Colonial America. PUBLICK OCCURENCES was published in Boston, Massachusetts by publisher Benjamin Harris and printer Richard Pierce. Unfortunately, it was the first and only edition of what was intended to be a monthly newspaper. The British Governor banned (outlawed) the newspaper and prevented any others from publishing without a license from the government. Here's what the British rulers of the colonies said (in old-style English terms ;) ...
... We "do hereby manifest and declare their high Resentment and Disallowance of said Pamphlet, and Order that the same be Suppressed and called in; strickly forbidden any person or persons for the future to Set forth any thing in Print without License first obtained from those that are or shall be appointed by the Government to grant the same."
This action by the British rulers made sure there would be no freedom of speech or press in the Colonies - at least until the American Revolution started 75 years later.

... the origin of baseball's well-known Tommy John surgery ...
With MLB regular season wrapping up it seems appropriate to explain the commonly heard, "He's going to have Tommy John done." ...
On this date, September 25, in 1974, Dr. Frank Jobe (pictured above at Dodger Stadium), an orthopedic surgeon (does operations involving bones), performed the first Ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction surgery on, then LA Dodger pitcher, Tommy John. The successful surgery, which extended Tommy John's career another 15 years, during which he gained more than half of his career pitching victories, became known as "Tommy John surgery." See the graphics below to see what happens during the surgery. The operation has become so effective that it is estimated that one-third of all Major League Baseball pitchers have had the operation.
