The third Friday of September is POW/MIA Recognition Day - a day, created by Congress in 1979, intended to remind America that we need to do everything we can to recognize those who never returned home from war. According to the latest Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency counts, there are more than 81,000 missing from WWII (72,661), the Korean War (7,616), the Vietnam War (1,587), the Cold War (126), and the Gulf Wars/other conflicts (6). If you've followed our daily half-staff alerts this past year, you've witnessed a number of Governor's ordering statewide half-staff of the U.S. Flag to honor WWII and Korean MIAs (Missing in Action combatants) finally being found, identified, and brought home for a proper burial. Visit today's Half-Staff alerts detail page to read about burials of two WWII MIAs. And, scan down our half-staff archives to find more we honored earlier this year.
Today's #NeverForgottenFriday Fallen Patriot Commemorations
Unfortunately, there was one Army Special Forces soldier killed in action, while serving in a Global War on Terror (GWOT) combat zone, this past week. Sergeant First Class (SFC), 41 of Greenbrier, TN, with the 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA, was killed by small arms fire while conducting combat operations in Wardak Province, Afghanistan on September 16. He is survived by his wife and son.
And, back on the homefront ...

Sadly, there were two peace officer and one firefighter line-of-duty deaths reported this past week. NYPD Detective Joseph Paolillo died of a 9/11 work-related cancer, Tuscaloosa Police Investigator Dornell Cousette, of Alabama, was shot and killed while serving a warrant, and Farmington Fire Chief Michael Bell, of Maine, was killed by a propane explosion (and 6 others were injured) when called to inspect a building.
Please, pray for all of the fallen patriots and their family and friends in mourning.
