On this date, September 9, in 1791, the federal district / city being built on the north bank of the Potomac River, was officially named in honor of President Washington as "Washington, D.C."
The D.C. stands for District of Columbia. Columbia is a feminine form of "Columbus," which back then was a nickname for USA. With passage of the Residence Act in 1790, Congress gave President Washington authority to pick the exact location of the capital in the Potomac River region bordering Virginia and Maryland. Our National Capital, Washington, D.C., was originally a square measuring 10 miles on each side. Eventually, land negotiations and city changes formed the D.C. you see below with land donated by Maryland and Virginia.
