On this date, September 5, in 1774, the First Continental Congress (pictured above) met with delegates from 12 of the 13 colonies.  Georgia did not attend because it more British loyalists than American patriots.  They met from September 5 to October 26, 1774, in Carpenters' Hall (pictured below), in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  The delegates gathered together to ask King George III of Britain not to punish Massachusetts, and all the colonies indirectly, for the Boston Tea Party.  The delegates also started to make plans for a full revolt, by having each colony set-up and train its own army (militia), if the king and the British parliament rejected the colonies' plea to not be punished.  King George III and the British ignored the colonies' petition and enforced the "Intolerable Acts" against Massachusetts.  And, so began, the path to the Revolutionary War between Britain and the colonies starting in 1775.

On this date, September 5, of 1977, NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) launched the Voyager 1 space probe.  It's initial mission was to study our outer solar system - recording pictures and data from Jupiter, Saturn, and Titan (Saturn's largest moon).  Check-out some of the pictures in the slideshow below.  After successfully completing that mission in August of 1980, the probe's mission was directed to go beyond our solar system and go to the farthest reaches of space.  It was the first spacecraft to cross the heliopause and enter the instellar medium (whatever those are ;)
And, yes, amazingly, 42 years later, Voyager 1 is still communicating with NASA - relaying pictures and information from deep space.  It is the most distant man-made object from Earth at a distance of more than 13.6 billion miles away.  In about 4 more years, NASA expects Voyager 1's propulsion system to die along with its ability to send back communications.
