On this date, September 3, in 1783, the Treaty of Paris was signed. It outlined the terms by which Great Britain surrendered America to the Colonials who fought so hard for their freedom during the Revolutionary War. The treaty negotiations (discussions and compromises reached to make peace between Great Britain and the United States of America), which started in April of 1782, were led by Ben Franklin, John Jay, Henry Laurens, and John Adams for the United States of America and by David Hartley and Richard Oswald representing the King of Great Britain.

On this date, September 3, in 1777, some historians claim that the Stars & Stripes (Betsy Ross’ famous flag) was first flown while fighting the British. At the Battle of Cooch's Bridge (aka the Battle of Iron Hill), General Maxwell and his Continental Army forces, displaying the new Flag of the United States of America, fought the first and only Revolutionary War battle in Delaware.
