On this date, August 29, in 1958, the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) in Colorado Springs, Colorado officially opened.  The first class began training, in the summer of 1955, about 50 miles away at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado.  Three years later, they were 'Seniors', the first class to graduate from the AFA.
The academy's mission is to "to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become leaders of character, motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation."  The Air Force is the youngest of the 5 service academies.  Graduates of the AFA receive a Bachelor of Science college degree and they are commissioned as officers, Second Lieutenants, in the U.S. Air Force.
