This 'Women to Honor Wednesday,' sitting between the ratification and adoption dates, recalls approval of the 19th Amendment. On August 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified - meaning it reached approval in three-quarters of the states. And, then, on August 26, 1920, the Amendment was signed into law (adopted).
The 19th Amendment was first introduced by Senator Aaron Sargent of California back in 1878.
That's right. It then took 42 years of protesting and politicking before it was ratified - upon the 36th state, Tennessee, approving it.
The 19th Amendment states:
The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.
Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
