Reminders from Our Flag

for Thursday, August 8, 2019
I was reminded of today's inspirational quote, from parts of the U.S. military's Oath of Enlistment, while trying to think of one statement that was proclaimed by both of these GWOT Fallen heroes from our town of Highlands Ranch, Colorado. It echoes their commitment to service - all the way to being KIA in Afghanistan in 2010 and 2005 respectively.

Today's Moment to Remember

... August 7 & 8 - a special time of remembrance and inspiration for Flag Steward ...
In the early stages of Flag Steward (called 'Beacon of Honor' back in 2015), the heroic lives of these two warriors intersected with my tech trials to bring my Vietnam Veteran dad's memorial flagpole to digital life. While researching SSG Falkel's (KIA 8/8/2005) and Cpl. Donahue's (KIA 8/7/2010) selfless acts of courageous service, listening to family and friends relay engaging stories about them, and then acting upon God's calling for me to enable more informed, inspired, patriotic student-citizens, I was motivated me to begin the march to where the Flag Steward app/service and its iHonor American Flag program is today.
I know some of our original Flag Stewards saw and know these warriors' stories, but ...
We have had a lot of new Flag Stewards join this service since Memorial Day - when local Chick-fil-As (CFAs) allowed me to voluntarily test a new service, "iHonor Fallen Soldier Tables," at their restaurants. Two of the 4 local CFAs honored Staff Sergeant Chris Falkel and Corporal Max Donahue.

This is the centerpiece of the Highlands Ranch Veterans Monument - commemorating our town's (a young town established in late 80s) three citizens who were killed in action. It's where I first started to learn about the heroics of Falkel, Donahue, and Stiles. And, sadly, yes, the engraving for Cpl Max Donahue's date of death is incorrect.

Our goal is to empower students to build and program their own hand-inscribed, storytelling iHonor American Flags commemorating our nearly 7,000 GWOT Fallen and gift them to the Fallen's high school alma maters. Air Academy HS will kickoff this march to 7,000 by building and distributing the first 50 Flags commemorating some of Colorado's GWOT Fallen starting in September.
