On this date, August 6, 1945 (74 years ago), Hiroshima, Japan, was destroyed by the world's first atomic bomb attack. This first atomic bombing by the Allies (U.S. with approval from U.K.) was done by a special outfitted B-29 Superfortress bomber that flew from Tinian to its target and back. The bombing killed between 90,000 to 146,000 people in Hiroshima. The decision was made to drop the bomb after the Japanese ignored the Allies call for an unconditional surrender or receive "prompt and utter destruction."
