On this date, July 25, in 1898, U.S. forces began the land attack of the Puerto Rico Campaign - which was part of the Spanish-American War. This 'Gloucester Landing Team' of 28 Marines and sailors (pictured above) were the first to attack the Spanish Army on Puerto Rico. And, within a few weeks, the U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine forces secured a significant portion of Puerto Rico. On August 13th, an armistice ( a cease-fire truce), was signed between President McKinley and Jules Cambon, representing the Spanish government. The short-lived Spanish-American War was over as Spain surrendered the territories of Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Philippines and Guam. The citizens of these territories were now free / liberated from Spanish rulers.

On this date, July 25, in 1954, Walter Payton was born in Columbia, Mississippi. This Hall of Famer, 9-time Pro-Bowler, and NFL records book smasher played 13 seasons (1975-87) with the Chicago Bears. Unfortunately, we lost him too soon - at age 45 he died of a rare liver disorder / cancer. But, his legacy lives on through the 'Walter Payton Man of the Year Award' - given to the NFL Player whose volunteer and charity work inspire the league and its fans the most.

Air Academy HS will kickoff this march to 7,000 by building and distributing the first 50 Flags commemorating some of Colorado's GWOT Fallen starting in September.
