On this date, July 24th, in 1897, Amelia Earhart was born in Atchison, Kansas. In 1932, she became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She did so by flying from Newfoundland to Derry in Northern Ireland. She had intended to fly to Paris, France, but strong winds, icy conditions, and mechanical issues forced her to land after 14 hours and 56 minutes of flying. Despite not reaching her intended end point, she had flown solo across the Atlantic and was recognized for her courageous, skillful flying by being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross from Congress and the National Geographic Gold Medal presented President Herbert Hoover.
Then, in July of 1937, she attempted to another aviation pioneering first - to fly the longest round-the-world flight. Unfortunately, on July 2nd, 1937, about three-quarters through her attempt, her plane disappeared near Howland Island in the South Pacific Ocean. Neither the plane wreckage or her body was ever recovered. This has led to years and years of folks trying to figure out where her plane went down and how it happened.
