Today's Moment to Remember
... the first lunar landing ...
... the first lunar landing ...
"The Eagle has landed."
[Statement by Armstrong alerting NASA Mission Control that the "Eagle" lunar module had landed safely on the surface of the moon.]
On this date in America, July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 successfully reached the moon. America had won the 'Space Race' against the Soviets.
Astronaut Neil Armstrong then became the first man on the moon and famously proclaimed, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
Do you know?
Who was the second man to walk on the moon and is in most of the pictures taken?

Today's Slice of Americana - Left on the Moon
Apollo 11's astronauts left behind, on the moon's surface, several historical items from former U.S. Presidents and other world leaders, including a plaque that read:
"Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon, July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind."
All these years later, is America still the only country to have had citizens walk on the moon's surface?

Astonishingly, America is still the only country to have done it. NASA's Apollo missions, which had 12 total astronauts walk on the moon, were amazingly successful and trailblazed well ahead of the rest of the world.
