On this date, July 16, in 1790, a site was designated for our nation's capital city. The 'Residence Act' required that the President select a site on the Potomac River as the permanent capital for the United States and establish residence there within 10 years. So, about 6 months later, President Washington proclaimed the area of land where the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers intersect to be our Nation's Capital - now known as the District of Columbia. And, he selected a French engineer, Pierre-Charles L'Enfant, to design and plan the city.
