"History has shown us that, on extraordinarily rare occasions, it becomes necessary for the federal government to intervene on behalf of individuals whose 14th Amendment rights to legal due process and equal protection may be violated by a state."

Today's Moment to Remember
[ 14th Amendment - page 1 ]
On this date, July 9th, in 1868, the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified upon the 28th State (South Carolina) approving the amendment. It is the longest amendment to the Constitution and has been challenged and interpreted in court more than any other. It defined U.S. Citizenship and provided rights to recently freed slaves from the Civil War - including citizenship, equal protection, and courts rights, as well as, requirements of the states, especially in the south, to enforce this amendment.

With the start of this new "Rock and Roll" music genre, some music experts say "Rock Around the Clock" was the first to reach #1 on the music sales charts. The most popular version of this song was recorded by Bill Haley & His Comets in 1954 for American Decca. It was a number one single on both the United States and United Kingdom charts. Regardless of it being the first "Rock song" to accomplish this feat or not, there is no denying that the Library of Congress made it part of the National Recording Registry for being "culturally, historically, or artistically significant."
