Today's Moment to Remember
[ Thure de Thulstrup's "Battle of Gettysburg", showing Pickett's Charge = public domain image ]
On this date, July 3, in 1863, the Battle of Gettysburg ended. And, with it, so did much of the Confederate Army's enthusiasm and will to win. General Lee's order to charge the Union Army that day, led to a massive defeat with about half his forces killed or wounded. Pickett's Charge, as its become known, was a poorly planned attempt to break through the Union line of defenses. General Robert E. Lee's reasoning for this attack, according to his secretary, Armistead Long, was that:
"There was... a weak point... where [Cemetery Ridge], sloping westward, formed the depression through which the Emmitsburg road passes. Perceiving that by forcing the Federal lines at that point and turning toward Cemetery Hill [Hays' Division] would be taken in flank and the remainder would be neutralized.... Lee determined to attack at that point, and the execution was assigned to Longstreet."
Major General George Pickett led the attack of 12,500 Confederates across a 3/4 mile open space to try and flank the middle of the Union's defenses on a ridge with rock walls for cover. This defeat of the Confederates was one they never recovered from physically, as in Army strength of numbers, or mentally, as in motivation to defeat the Union Army.
