Today's Moment to Remember
On this date, July 2nd, in 1964, a famous Civil Rights Law was signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson with its biggest advocate, Martin Luther King Jr., looking on. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed discrimination (unfair treatment) of citizens based on race, religion, sex, or ethnicity. It also forbidded segregation (unfairly separating people) in schools, work, and public facilities. President John F. Kennedy first called for this bill (law) on June 11, 1963.
And, after JFK's assassination, President Johnson stated, on November 27, 1963,
"No memorial oration or eulogy could more eloquently honor President Kennedy's memory than the earliest possible passage of the civil rights bill for which he fought so long."
