Today's "Women to Honor Wednesday" Moment to Remember
On June 4, of 1919, the US Congress finally reached enough votes to propose (pass) the 19th Amendment - giving women the right to vote. So, this meant that it was now in the hands of the states' legislatures for final ratification (approval). That meant that at least least three-fourths, or 75%, of the then 48 states (36) had to approve the amendment for it to become a new law of the land. From 1917 to 1919, the US Congress voted 5 times on women's suffrage (right to vote). Finally, on the 5th attempt, the amendment attained the two-thirds, or 67%, majority vote within the House of Representatives and Senate. Thankfully, it didn't take the states that long to approve the 19th Amendment. Just over a year after the US Congress sent the amendment to the states for approval, Tennessee narrowly passed the amendment in August of 1920; thereby, giving it the necessary 36 states 'yes' votes to become an amendment to our US Constitution.
