Today's Moment to Remember
... Military Appreciation Month ...
... Military Appreciation Month ...
Probably because May has the most observance days related to the military, in 1999, the US Congress established May as 'Military Appreciation Month.' This month is a time to show gratitude and support for the sacrifices made by our military personnel in the present and past to gain and uphold freedoms at home and abroad. The military-related observance days in May include:
Loyalty Day on May 1st
VE (Victory in Europe) Day on May 8th
Military Spouse Appreciation Day on Friday before Mother's Day (May 10, 2019)
Armed Forces Day on third Saturday in May (May 18, 2019)
Memorial Day on last Monday in May (May 27, 2019)
[ Note: Next year, I'll explain 'Loyalty Day' - as it's an official national holiday that I was not aware of until now. It was enacted by Public Law 85-529 on July 18, 1958 ]

"Surely no issue unites us more than our appreciation for our military personnel who are bringing aid to devastated countries, defending us against terrorism, and fighting to make a free election possible ..."

On this date, May 1, in 1931, the Empire State Building opened. At a rooftop height of 1,250 feet, it was the world's tallest building for nearly 40 years - when the World Trade Center overtook it. 88 years later, it's amazingly still the 5th tallest in the US and 28th in the world.
