Women to Honor Wednesday

For this 'Women to Honor Wednesday,' we pay tribute to the long and admirable life of Helen Kelller. Born in Tuscambia, Alabama, in 1880, Helen Keller proved that will and determination one can overcome some incredible obstacles. At 19 months she got an illness that made her deaf and blind. With the help of her teacher, Anne Sullivan, she learned to communicate using gestures and hand movements at first. Amazingly, she went on to become an American author and lecturer. Yes, that's right, she learned to speak and was the first deaf person to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree.
She's an idol to disabled folks and serves as an inspiration to us all by showing that a fighting spirit can overcome nearly impossible odds. And, one of our most powerful quotes reinforces her intelligence and grace:
“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt with the heart.”
