... Abe Lincoln's death ...

[ The Presidential booth of Ford's Theatre on the evening of April 14, 1865: (from left to right) Assassin John Wilkes Booth, Abe Lincoln, Mary Todd Lincoln, Clara Harris, and Henry Rathbone ]
President Abraham Lincoln died on April 15, 1865, about 9 hours after being shot in the head by John Wilkes Booth - an actor and Confederate spy.  Did you know this assassination was part of a much larger plan to seek revenge and turn the Union upside down after defeating General Lee just 6 days earlier?
Booth and his Confederate supporters planned to kill Lincoln and General Grant at Ford's Theatre and then go kill Vice President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of State Seward at their homes.  Fortunately, at the last minute, Grant decided to go visit his kids in New Jersey instead of going to the play, Our American Cousin.  And, fortunately, Henry Rathbone, who attended the play with Lincoln, attempted to apprehend Booth, but was stabbed.  The chase for Booth, that followed, thankfully, derailed his plans to kill others.

Exactly 52 years after, then Lance Corporal Stogner, took heroic actions with his KA-bar to save his Marine buddy during a Vietnam War battle on April 5, 1967, he was awarded the Navy Cross - the 2nd highest award for valor given to naval service personnel.
