Today is "Patriots' Day" - a state holiday in 4 states, MA, CT, ME, and WI, to celebrate the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the first battles of the American Revolutionary War, on April 19th, 1775. The colonial fighters, nicknamed "Minutemen," that day defeated the Brits at both battles. Famous Patriots involved in the battles north of Boston, Massachusetts included John Hancock, Samuel Adams, and Paul Revere.
Since 1969, Patriots' Day has celebrated on the third Monday in April - which, in Massachusetts, coincides with the day of the Boston Marathon. The world famous Boston Marathon is the centerpiece of the biggest Patriots' Day celebration - and has been since the very first running on April 19, 1897.

This regional celebration of the start of the American Revolutionary War, "Patriots' Day," is easily and often confused with "Patriot Day."
"Patriot Day," synonymous with 9/11, was created when a Congressional bill, designating September 11 as a national day of mourning, became Public Law 107-89 on December 18, 2001. Then, on September 4, 2002, President Bush proclaimed 9/11/2002 to be the first "Patriot Day."
