Today's Moment to Remember
Home of the Brave
On this date, April 10, of 1778, Captain John Paul Jones, regarded by many as the "Father of the U.S. Navy", set sail on the USS Ranger to raid British ships within United Kingdom waters. This was the first time during the Revolutionary War that America showed its might and determination to be free of British rule by fighting them in their waters. His most famous act of defiance and bravery occurred during a battle between John Paul Jones' USS Bon Homme Richard and the British HMS Serapis ship in the North Sea. The USS Bon Homme Richard was badly injured by cannon fire from the HMS Serapis - knocking out much of Captain John Paul Jones' firepower and killing many of his gunners. When the British captain aboard HMS Serapis called for his surrender, Jones replied, "I have not yet begun to fight!"
Subsequently, Marines and seamen high in the Richard's sail-rigging cleared the deck of the Serapis with their sharpshooting gunfire, then raided Serapis and forced the captain and crew to surrender.
