On this date (OTD), March 26, in 1945 and March 26, in 1982, there was an honorable ending and beginning.  The Battle of Iwo Jima ended on March 26, 1945, after 5 weeks of some of the toughest and bloodiest fighting in the Pacific during WWII.  The battle was won by US armed forces (Marines, Navy, & Army), but at a high cost of 6,821 KIA and 19,217 wounded.
And, on March 26, 1982, construction began on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial with a 150-shovel groundbreaking ceremony led by
General Price, US Senators Warner and Mathias and future Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel.  Less than 8 months later, thousands of Vietnam War Veterans marched to open and dedicate the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on November 13, 1982.

40 years ago, OTD, March 26 of 1979, Larry Bird and his Indiana State University Sycamores played Earvin "Magic" Johnson and his Michigan State University Spartans in the NCAA Men's Basketball Final in Salt Lake City, UT.  This match-up began a rivalry between Bird and Magic that, then ESPN's Andy Katz said, "helped create the interest in the Final Four and they made today's NBA."  Michigan State won the title game 75 to 64.
