Today's Moment to Remember
On Feb. 23rd of 1870, Hiram Rhodes Revels, became the first African American to serve in the US Congress - as a Senator for Mississippi. During the Civil War, Hiram served as a Chaplain in the Union Army - a position in which he helped set-up two regiments of "United States Colored Troops." At the end of the Civil War, Hiram settled in Mississippi and became involved in government / political leadership. And then, after his time in the US Senate, he became the first school President of what is today's Alcorn State University.
