Today's Moment to Remember
Happy (real) birthday to George Washington!
Yes, this past Monday, we celebrated Presidents Day, a National Holiday originally entitled 'Washington's Birthday.' But, today, Feb. 22nd is his actually birthday. George Washington was born in Popes Creek, Colony of Virginia, British America on Feb. 22, 1732. Interestingly, the 'Father of Our Country' was an Independent. He had no political party affiliation and expressed his concerns about party influence negatively affecting America - as shown in the following quotes from his farewell speech:
"The common and continual mischief's of the spirit of (political) party are sufficient to make it the interest and the duty of a wise people to discourage and restrain it."
... and ...
"The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to (political) party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism."

Today's Slice of Americana - Sports
On this date, Feb. 22, in 1980, the USA Hockey team, the youngest in the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, upset the heavily favored, 4-time defending Olympic champion Russia hockey team. It is still considered one of the greatest sports upsets ever and is referred to as, "The Miracle on Ice." The US and Russia were in the middle of the bitter Cold War at the time of the game, so there was deep hatred for the Russians playing against Team USA on our home ice in Lake Placid, NY.
