Today's Star-Spangled Inspirational Quote
... from author who told the story of today's 'Women to Honor' ...

“Their dark skin, their gender, their economic status--none of those were acceptable excuses for not giving the fullest rein to their imaginations and ambitions.”
― Margot Lee Shetterly
from Margot's book:  Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race
Wednesday's Women to Honor
... NASA's 'Race to the Moon' heroes ...
Picture
On this 'Women to Honor Wednesday' of 'Black History Month,' we recall ...
... a historical movie that was released in February 2016.  'Hidden Figures' celebrated 3 brilliant African American women who served as 'human computers' for NASA back in the 1950s and 60s.  Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Dorothy Vaughan helped turn around some troubled NASA space missions by using their smarts and leadership skills in the face of discriminatory conditions.   NASA, like most big, corporate American companies back then, was white and male-dominated.  But, Mary, Katherine, and Dorothy turned doubters into believers by helping to make what seemed to be impossible, man walking on the moon, a reality in 1969.

[ Note: A great movie (and book I'd bet) that I highly recommend - as it shows how far we've come in working together and the tension and amazing heroics of the 'Great Space Race' in the 1960s ]

Dorothy Vaughan was the first African American female supervisor in NASA history
Picture
Mary Jackson was NASA's first black female engineer - a job that required lots of, what we call today, STEM skills
Picture
Katherine Johnson was the first woman, yes, first woman, in NASA history to co-author a flight research report.
In fact, John Glenn, the first American astronaut to orbit (go around the Earth), specifically asked for Katherine to check the NASA computer's math to ensure his flight path calculations were correct.
