On this date, Jan. 22, in 1943, we honor the World War II allied forces in the Pacific led by General MacArthur. After a year of battling the Japanese in New Guinea, the U.S. and Australian armies were finally victorious against the Japanese. This first land battle win marked the beginning of the Allied forces recapturing islands across the Pacific and freeing its citizens from Japanese rule.
