Today's Flag Status
In 48 of 50 states, the US Flag is at full staff. Arizona and Alabama has Our Flag at half-staff.
In 48 of 50 states, the US Flag is at full staff. Arizona and Alabama has Our Flag at half-staff.
Official U.S. Flag Half-Staffs Today (Jan. 15th):
In ARIZONA, the Governor ordered the US and State Flags to half-staff on Jan. 15th, the day of interment (funeral / burial) to honor fallen Police Officer Clayton Townsend
In ALABAMA, the Governor issued a statement about their recently fallen peace officer, Sergeant Carter, but did not make a flag order. But, according to an Alabama news station, Governor Ivey ordered the US and State Flags to half-staff to honor Birmingham PD Officer, Sergeant Carter, who was shot and killed in the line of duty this weekend. The half-staff will remain until sunset, Sun, Jan. 20th.
______________
State and/or City Flag Half-Staff Orders:
In SHREVEPORT, Louisiana, the Mayor called for all Flags (US, State, and City Flags) to fly at half-staff to honor Shreveport, LA Police Officer Chateri Payne, who was shot and killed off-duty this weekend. The half-staff will remain until sunset on Sun, Jan. 20th
_________
Other Half-Staff Happenings: Future alerts and current Citizen-led events
Currently, the following states have fallen peace officers for whom there may be a Governor order to honor them with a half-staff soon.
In CALIFORNIA, the Governor ordered the US and State Flags, at the California Capitol complex, to half-staff immediately (this AM) to honor Davis PD Officer Corona, who was shot and killed in the line of duty, while assisting with a traffic accident, on Thursday night. She just became a police officer a few week ago. [ Note: The CA Governor did not state the timing of this half-staff - 1 day or until her interment? ]
In ILLINOIS, the Governor will follow the Illinois Flag Display Act to honor a recently fallen peace officer - on the officer's day of interment and 2 days before it.
So, if you see the US and State Flags at businesses and homes at half-staff in CA or IL that is who they are honoring. You're never in the wrong to lower your own US Flag to honor someone, but just be ready to answer for whom you're doing it ;)

OTD, Jan. 15th, in 1892, James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, published the first set of rules for the game. And, boy, did they need those rules. Listen, via the YouTube video below, to the audio interview of James Naismith from 1939, 48 years after the first basketball game was played at the Springfield College YMCA gymnasium (see picture below).
