Official U.S. Flag Half-Staffs Today (Jan. 12th):
In CALIFORNIA, the Governor ordered the US and State Flags, at the California Capitol complex, to half-staff immediately (this AM) to honor Davis PD Officer Corona, who was shot and killed in the line of duty, while assisting with a traffic accident, on Thursday night. She just became a police officer a few week ago. [ Note: The CA Governor did not state the timing of this half-staff - 1 day or until her interment? ]
In UTAH, all Flags are at half-staff, on Sat. Jan 12th, the day of interment, to honor Provo Police Department Master Police Officer Joseph Shinners, who was shot and killed in the line of duty by a fugitive on Jan. 5th.
In IOWA, the Governor ordered the US and State Flags to half-staff starting on Fri, Jan. 11th, until sunset on Sun., Jan 13th, in honor and remembrance of firefighter Eric Hosette who died in the line of duty in Clinton, IA on Saturday, January 5, 2019.

State Flag Half-Staff Orders:
None
_________
Other Half-Staff Happenings: Future alerts and current Citizen-led events
In MINNESOTA, a local news station, says the Governor ordered the US and State Flags to half-staff from Thu., Jan 10, to Sun, Jan. 13, to honor a US Marine from Minnesota who was killed in his barracks on Jan. 1st. The MN Governor's website does NOT have a half-staff order posted as of Thursday afternoon. The order may be delayed because the Governor was just sworn into office as the new Governor on Tuesday.
In OHIO, the Governor, stated via Twitter, but not yet by official press release, or with a specific date, that, "the death of Colerain Township Police Officer Dale Woods is not only a tragedy for the community he served, it is also a heartbreaking loss that all Ohioans share. We will be lowering the flags in his honor."
And, in ARIZONA, the Governor ordered the US and State Flags to half-staff on Jan. 9th to honor fallen Police Officer Clayton Townsend and will order it again on the day of his interment (funeral / burial) - TBD.
So, if you see the US and State Flags at businesses and homes at half-staff already in UT, AZ, and OH, that is who they are honoring. You're never in the wrong to lower your own US Flag to honor someone, but just be ready to answer for whom you're doing it ;)

Moment to Remember
... from President Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1941 State of the Union Address ...
On January 6, 1941, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) delivered his "Four Freedoms" speech. During the 1941 State of the Union Address, FDR outlined 4 liberties that folks "everywhere in the world" should enjoy:
Freedom of Speech
Freedom of Worship
Freedom from Want
Freedom from Fear
And, of course, 11 months later, with the surprise attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor, FDR challenged US citizens to fight for theirs and others freedom from cruel leaders in Germany and Japan.
