Today's Star-Spangled Inspirational Quote
... is from today's Moment to Remember honoree - President George Washington ...
“To be prepared for war is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace.”
- George Washington to Congress in NYC on January 8, 1790

Today's Flag Status
Across the USA, Our Flag flies at full staff.

In New York City, all Flags are at half-staff to honor a fallen FDNY firefighter until further notice - Firefighter Steven Pollard died in the line of duty late Sunday, Jan.6th.  This order from the NYC Mayor includes all flags, the American flag, the New York State and City flags, and the POW-MIA flag on all City buildings as well as stationary flagstaffs throughout the five boroughs.
Also, the Governor of UT ordered the UT State Flag to half-staff on the day of the funeral, on Sat. Jan. 12th, for Provo Police Officer Joseph Shinners, who was shot and killed during an arrest attempt on Sat. Jan. 5th.  So, if you see the US and State Flags at businesses and homes at half-staff already in UT, that is who they are honoring.

[ Note: We are monitoring for potential half-staff declarations from the Governors of UT, NY, and IA because their states recently had first responder line of duty deaths. ]
[  Note 2: Interesting local half-staff:  In Beckley, WV, the Chick-fil-A is flying its US Flag at half-staff to honor a US Marine, Terrance Gober II, killed in a car accident in front of Chick-fil-A last week.  And, on Tuesday, the Chick-fil-A at Beckley Galleria is going to announce a scholarship fund to benefit US Marine Gober's son.  ]

Today's Slice of Americana -  Art
... an artistic masterpiece finally comes to America ...
Picture
OTD, Jan. 8th, in 1963, the famed Italian artist's, Leonardo da Vinci's, Mona Lisa painting is shown in the US for the fist time.  In 1962, before shipment from Europe to be shown at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the painting was appraised at being worth $100 million - a Guinness Book of World Record.  In today's US dollars that equal to an unbelievable value of $820 million.

The painting has been called "the best known, the most visited, and the most parodied work of art in the world."  (See some funny ones in the video below)
