... a Women to Honor Wednesday ...

Today's Star-Spangled Inspirational Quote
... comes from today's Slice of Americana honoree ...
"The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don't play together, the club won't be worth a dime."
- Babe Ruth
Today's Flag Status
Across the USA and its Territories, the US Flag flies at HALF-STAFF to honor the life and service of our 41st US President, George H. W. Bush, and will remain so until sunset on December 30th.  And, there is an additional concurrent half-staff honoree in PA.

In PENNSYLVANIA, while the US Flag remains at half-staff until Dec. 30th to honor President George H W Bush, the Governor has ordered the PA State / Commonwealth Flags to half-staff to honor Scott Dannheimer, 53, of Shamokin, a Captain of the East End Fire Company in Coal Township and it will remain at half-staff until the day of his interment on Thursday, Dec. 27th.

On this 'Women to Honor Wednesday,' we recall 4 nuns who, on this date, became the first US Navy nurses.  Aboard the USS Red Rover on the Mississippi, in December of 1862, these nuns, from the Sisters of the Order of the Holy Cross, cared for Civil War Union Army injured and sick. Their services paved the way for the Navy Nurse Corps to be established in 1908.

[ Babe Ruth - in his last season as a Red Sox (1919) ]
OTD, Dec. 24th of 1919, the Red Sox sold the contract for Babe Ruth to the NY Yankees.  Superstition believers say this trade began an 86-year World Series championship drought for the Red Sox - known as the "Curse of the Bambino."
