Today's Star-Spangled Inspirational Quote
"The spirit of Christmas is the spirit of love and of generosity and of goodness. It illuminates the picture window of the soul, and we look out upon the world's busy life and become more interested in people than in things."
- Thomas S. Monson

... a surprise attack on Dec. 25, 1776 ...
During the evening on this date, Dec. 25th in 1776, the Continental Army's General George Washington began a "sneak-attack" on the British allied German-Hessian forces at Trenton, NJ. The surprise attack began with Washington leading his army across the nearly frozen Delaware River. Then, on the morning of Dec. 26th the Continental Army began and quickly won the Battle of Trenton.
German-American artist, Emanuel Leutze, painted the renowned "Washington Crossing the Delaware" in 1851. Unfortunately, the original painting was destroyed during a World War II allied bombing raid on Bremen, Germany in 1942. Thankfully, Leutze had painted two other versions - one resides in the White House and the other hangs in the Metropolitian Museum of Art in New York City (from what I recall when I saw it as a teen 30 years ago, it was enormous and incredibly life-like painting).
