Today's Flag Status
Across the USA and its Territories, the US Flag flies at HALF-STAFF to honor the life and service of our 41st US President, George H. W. Bush, and will remain so until sunset on December 30th.  And, there are additional concurrent half-staff honorees in SC & VA.

In VIRGINIA, the US and State Flags continue to fly at half-staff with a concurrent tribute, from sunrise to sunset on Mon, Dec. 17, for Army Captain Andrew Ross, a decorated Special Forces soldier, who was killed during a massive IED explosion in Afghanistan on Nov. 27th that killed 4 special operators.
In SOUTH CAROLINA, the half-staff US and State Flags, from sunsrise to sunset on Mon, Dec. 17th, are concurrently honoring former Lieutenant Governor William Brantley Harvey Jr..

OTD, December 17th in 1903, the Wright brothers made the first motor-powered airplane flight.  On that famous day, they made four flights on the beach near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina - the longest flight only lasted about one minute.

OTD, December 17th, in 1989, The Simpsons TV show launched on Fox - becoming the first Fox TV series to crack the top 30 rated TV shows in a season.  Even if you're not a fan of The Simpsons, you have to respect the show's success.  This American Sitcom, making a parody of American society, started as a sketch on the Tracy Ullman Show in 1987.  The characters, except Bart, were named after the creator's (Matt Groening's) family.  ;)
