On this date, December 6th in 1865, the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, by the required number of states (27), abolishing slavery. It states, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, save as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." In January and April of 1865, the House and Senate passed the Amendment and sent it on to the states for ratification (approval).

On this date, Dec. 6th in 1997, the SEC held its 6th Conference Championship game. Tennessee beat Auburn in a thriller. Down 20–7, Peyton Manning, a Senior, led the Vols to a 30–29 victory. Peyton threw for 4 TDs and was named the MVP. The next weekend, he was outvoted by Charles Woodson for the Heisman Trophy
