Today's Star-Spangled Inspirational Quote
... is about WWII's Battle of Tarawa - featured in today's Moment to Remember...
"Last week some 2,000 or 3,000 United States Marines, most of them now dead or wounded, gave the nation a name to stand beside those of Concord Bridge, the Bonhomme Richard, the Alamo, Little Bighorn, and Belleau Wood. The name was Tarawa.
...
The Marines fought almost solely on esprit decorps, I was certain. It was inconceivable to most Marines that they should let another Marine down, or that they could be responsible for dimming the bright reputation of their Corps. The Marines simply assumed that they were the world's best fighting men."

Today's Moment to Remember
... WWII's Battle of Tarawa ...
... WWII's Battle of Tarawa ...
On this date (OTD), November 20, in 1943, the Battle of Tarawa began. This World War II Pacific battle, the first American offensive in the critical central Pacific region. lasted just 4 days, but had nearly the same American casualties as 6 months of battling at Guadalcanal. This battle was the first time that the Japanese resisted the U.S. forces making landfall (amphibious landings). Nonetheless, the U.S. armed forces were victorious - eliminating 4,690 Japanese soldiers compare to 1,696 U.S. military members who were KIA and 2,101 wounded (almost all were Marines) .
