On this date, and within the dates of Oct 23-26, in 1944, the Battle of Leyte Gulf occurred between the US and Japanese Imperial Navy near the Philippine Islands.  Some proclaim it was the largest naval battle in history involving
 more than 300 U.S. warships and 67 Japanese ships and resulted in the destruction of the Japanese Navy including the Japanese Battleship Musashi, one of the largest ever built.

On this date, Oct 24 in 1901, Annie Edson Taylor, a 63-year old teacher, becomes the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel - a fall of 165 feet (about the height of a 16 floor building).
Niagara Falls is made up of three waterfalls (Horseshoe, American, and Bridal Veil Falls) that are on the border between the U.S. and Canada.
