On this date, and within the dates of Oct 23-26, in 1944, the Battle of Leyte Gulf occurred between the US and Japanese Imperial Navy near the Philippine Islands.  Some proclaim it was the largest naval battle in history involving
more than 300 U.S. warships and 67 Japanese ships and resulted in the destruction of the Japanese Navy including the Japanese Battleship Musashi, one of the largest ever built.
