In NORTH CAROLINA, US and State Flags are half-staff from sunrise Thu, Oct 18, until sunset on Sun, Oct 21 to honor North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper Kevin Conner who was shot and killed in the line of duty in Columbus County on Wednesday.

On this date (OTD), October 18th, of 1867, the land of Alaska was transferred from Russia to the United States. Led by Secretary of State, William Seward, the US purchased the land from Russia for just $7.2 million (equivalent to $126 million in present day). President Andrew Johnson called for a special Senate session on April 1, 1867 to approve the purchase, then in May Russia's Czar signed the agreement, and finally on Oct 18th a formal military ceremony was held to turn over the land from Russia to USA.

On this date (OTD), Oct 18 in 1924, Red Grange, nicknamed "The Galloping Ghost", had his greatest college football game - scoring 6 touchdowns. Red Grange was a halfback for the University of Illinois, the Chicago Bears, and for the short-lived New York Yankees (football). His signing with the Bears solidified the National Football League (NFL) as a long-lasting league. He was a charter member of both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame.
