On September 18, 1947, as part of the National Security Act of 1947, a fifth service was added to the Department of Defense - the US Air Force.  Born from the Army Air Corps, which started back in 1907, the US Air Force is the youngest branch of the US Armed Forces.  It is the largest, nearly 500,000 strong when you combine active, reserve, and guard personnel, and most technologically superior air force in the world.  Its mission is the maintain air and space superiority for the US around the globe.
