Today's Star-Spangled Inspiration
"I've always been really nationalistic, and I had a brother killed in Korea. And I think the 'Star Spangled Banner,' even today - and I've heard it a heckuva lot of times, OK - has always been a significant feeling to me."

Today's Flag Status
Our Flag flies at full staff across the USA, except in South Dakota and Tennessee. And, Pennsylvania has its State Flag half-staff.
Our Flag flies at full staff across the USA, except in South Dakota and Tennessee. And, Pennsylvania has its State Flag half-staff.
In South Dakota, the US and SD State Flags are half-staff from sun up to sun down to commemorate David Fischer, assistant chief of the Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance Service. Fischer died Friday, while responding to a house fire in Tilford.
In Tennessee, the US and TN State Flags are half-staff to pay tribute to recognize the service and sacrifice of U.S. Navy Ensign Harold P. DeMoss of Nashville, who went missing on June 23, 1945 while serving as a member of Fighting Squadron 100 (VF-100) from Naval Air Station Barbers Point in Oahu, Hawaii.
In Pennsylvania, ONLY the PA State Flag is at half-staff to honor Allegheny County Judge Robert E. “Bob” Colville.

Agree or Disagree?
Our Flag of the United States of America was adopted on June 14, 1777. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14th as Flag Day. And then in 1946, "National Flag Day" was established by Congress.
The first formal observance of Flag Day was first celebrated at Stony Hill School in 1895 by Bernard Cigrand - a school teacher in Waubeka, Wisconsin. Starting in the late 1880s, Cigrand spoke around the country promoting patriotism, respect for the flag, and the need for the annual observance of a flag day on June 14, the day in 1777 that the Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes.
Cigrand became the "Father of Flag Day" because he almost singlehandedly established the holiday.
Unfortunately, nowadays, Flag Day is a nearly forgotten day, especially by kids, because most students are out of school enjoying their summer fun by that date.
So, I propose we establish 'Flag Day at School' on September 14, 2017. It's exactly 3 months after the National Flag Day, is the morning upon which Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the lyrics of the 'Star-Spangled Banner, ' it's within the same week that the Pledge of Allegiance celebrates its birth (Sept. 8, 1892), is within a few days of Patriot Day (9/11) and Constitution Day (9/17), and it's a date when all the schools across our country are in-session.
This would be a perfect time to celebrate Our Flag and help kids to realize all the good it stands for.
Do you agree or disagree with this idea of a ... 'Flag Day at School'?
