Today's Historical Reminder
... How "Uncle Sam" came to be ...

OTD, September 13, in 1989, a Congressional Joint Resolution established "Uncle Sam Day" to celebrate the birth date of its creator, Samuel Wilson - who was born on September 13, 1766.  As the legend goes, the "Uncle Sam" nickname was established by soldiers during the War of 1812 because Sam Wilson, a meatpacker from New York, stamped his meal barrels with "US" on them.  So, the soldiers, enjoying Sam Wilson's meat, called the meat barrels a delivery from "Uncle Sam."
In 1961, Congress also named Uncle Sam an American symbol of strength and idealism.
