In Michigan, US and MI Flags on state complex are half-staff on Wed, Sep 5, to recognize former state Senator Patricia Birkholz.
In Maryland, the US and Maryland State Flags are lowered to half-staff, until sunset Saturday, Sep 8, for Assistant Fire Chief Daniel "Danny" Lister of the Queen Anne-Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Company.

This past Friday, on August 31st, Army history was made. Staff Sergeant Amanda Kelley of the 1st Armored Division became the first enlisted female soldier to complete the grueling training required to earn the coveted US Army Ranger tab. 347 Ranger wannabes started in July and only 127 graduated - including the one and only SSG Kelley. Congratulations to her for carrying on the American pioneering spirit - always breaking new barriers.

OTD, Sep 5, in 1847, Wild West legend Jesse James was born in Centerville, Missouri. Following the American Civil War, Jesse and his brother Frank formed a group of outlaws, robbing banks, trains, stagecoaches and stores. In 1882, after the governor of Missouri offered a $10,000 reward for their capture dead or alive. A member of the gang shot 34-year-old Jesse in the back and claimed the reward.
