The United States National Park Service was created on August 25, 1916 by our Congress' National Park Service Organic Act. The National Park Service (NPS) is part of the U.S. Department of the Interior. President Woodrow Wilson signed the law and spelled out the NPS mission "to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and wildlife therein, and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations."
Pictured above on right - President Theodore Roosevelt and John Muir, an ardent conservationist, paved the way to protecting America's wilderness areas.
Currently, the NPS has more than 20,000 employees managing 417 places -including 59 national parks.
