Today's Star-Spangled Inspiration
... is a quote from the Marine Corps' first female Marine infantry officer - 1st Lt. Marina Hierl
"I wanted to be part of a group of people that would be willing to die for each other," Hierl said.
"I wanted to lead a platoon. I didn't think there was anything better in the Marine Corps I could do."

Today's Flag Status
Our Flag flies at full staff across the USA, except in OK.

Women to Honor Wednesday
... Honors two firsts within the 100 years of women in the US Marine Corps ...

100 years ago, Opha Mae Johnson, unbelievably at the age of 39, enlisted in the US Marine Corps - the first woman to do so.  Marines shipping out and fighting in Europe during World War I created a shortage of Marines.  When the call went out to fill openings back home with female Marines, Opha was at the head of the line of 300 that day.  She served as a admin clerk at Headquarters Marine Corps in Arlington, VA.
Very nearly 100 years later, First Lieutenant Marina Hierl is the first woman to complete the Marine Corps' demanding Infantry Officer Course and now the first to lead a platoon of grunts (infantry Marines).  And, so far, Marines in the platoon she leads are proud to be part of her team.  Lance Cpl Kai Segura said, "She's one of us."

Today's Slice of Americana

... yeah, I know they're not American, but the reaction of women ( like my mom's ;) to their arrival in America sure was classic - screaming, screaming, screaming...

On Aug 15, 1965, the Beatles performed at their most famous concert - an outdoor performance at Shea Stadium in NYC.  It had record-breaking attendance of more than 55,000 fans.
