OTD (On this date) when we remember the last ground combat unit leaving Vietnam, this quote reflects how Americans should have embraced troops returning from Vietnam ;( [ As you can see in the picture above, my dad, then a US Army Captain scout helicopter pilot, did receive a heroes welcome by family and friends at home in Roslindale - Boston. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case for the majority of Vietnam Vets. ]

On this date, August 11, in 1972, the last US military ground combat unit, the 3rd Battalion of the 21st US Army Infantry Regiment, departed Vietnam. Our Cold War efforts to prevent the spread of communism in Asia were now on a path toward ending.

On this date, August 11th, in 1921, famed author Alex Haley was born. He went on to 20 years on the US Coast Guard (from 1939-59, including WWII and Korea) and became the Coast Guard's first Chief Journalist. After retiring, he wrote many books - including the 1976 Pulitzer Prize winning author of 'Roots.' In 1977, his book was turned into an epic TV series that taught Americans many lessons about slavery.
